56. Israel Discovers Oil

Maj.-Gen. Ido Nechushtan, Commander of the Israeli Air Force, told the Fisher Institute for Strategic Air and Space Research in Herzliya on Tuesday that Hizbullah forces in Lebanon have firepower unparalleled by many states. The remarks mirrored recent comments by US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates that Hizbullah has more missiles than most countries. Nechushtan added that Israel is “fighting against missiles and rockets in large numbers, which the enemy sees as an efficient weapon and therefore invests money and effort in it. Today’s wars are also public opinion wars and therefore we have to know how to hit terrorist targets only and avoid hitting uninvolved populations,”

Christian leaders at more than 1,500 churches in all 50 states and in more than 50 countries are scheduled to hold religious services Sunday (May 23) focused on educating their congregants about the importance of Israel to their faith. Just days before the planned church events, an overwhelming majority in Congress approved President Obama’s request to fund Israel’s new anti-missile system so that nation can defend itself against rockets from Iran-backed terrorist groups on its borders.

A recently-released report by the U.S. Department of Interior indicates that Israel has massive reserves of natural gas and oil supplies just offshore, lying under the Mediterranean. “The U.S. Geological Survey estimated a mean 1.7 billion barrels of recoverable oil and a mean of 122 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in the Levant Basin Province using a geology based assessment methodology,” stated the report’s executive summary.
Israelis for years have lamented that if God wanted to bless them with a “promised land” He could have given them the oil-rich Arabian Peninsula. Thus the report has become big news in the Israeli media and the energy industry. Several oil and gas companies are already at work there and have made more modest discoveries in recent years. But this is by far the biggest development to date and some reports indicate Israel could begin using the natural gas — and possibly exporting it — within two years. Read more.

“If Israel attacks, we will react in a nonconventional manner,” Hizbullah sources told the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Watan this week. “The Israelis will be surprised by the weapons we will use against them.” Senior Israeli security sources have been warning in recent months that “all of the weaponry in Syria’s arsenal has reached or will reach Hizbullah,” including chemical warheads for Scud missiles, added Yediot Ahronot. Syria has a lethal stockpile of chemical and biological armaments, including warheads tipped with sarin and VX gas. Meanwhile, IDF intelligence chief Brig.-Gen. Yossi Baidatz told a key Knesset Committee on Tuesday that the Scud-D missiles reportedly transferred to Hizbullah by Syria recently are just the ‘tip of the iceberg’, saying the Shi’ite militia has such an organized arms supply and support network, it “cannot exactly be called arms-smuggling perations.”     Â
