6. U.N. Racism Conference and More

A few weeks ago a U.N. sponsored event in Geneva, Switzerland came and went without much attention. The Durban Review Conference was a follow-up to a previous conference to combat worldwide racism. One of the speakers was Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. (Do you see anything wrong with this picture?)

He chose April 20, 2009, the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day, to call for the decimation of Israel. He appealed to the assembly to encourage and support the fight to eradicate what he called Israel’s “barbaric racism. Efforts must be made to put an end to Zionism,” intoned the fanatical Ahmadinejad. The Muslim world cheered; delegates from twenty-four Western countries rose as one body and marched to the exit. Prior to the opening ceremonies of the conference, Germany, Australia, Canada, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Israel and the United States sent their regrets.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu paid tribute to those countries that chose not to give their seal of approval to the events in Geneva. Netanyahu vowed, “We will not let the Holocaust deniers perpetrate another holocaust on the Jewish people,” he said. “This is the highest responsibility of the State of Israel and of myself as prime minister.”

One has to question why the United Nations provided a venue for a head of state who leads a country where methodical and organized tyranny is practiced daily, a country where women are cruelly subjugated.

The Israel Project reports that Israel’s winning entry in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest spotlights the importance of coexistence between Jews and Arabs. Two Israeli women, Mira Awad, an Arab musicain and actress, and Jewish pop singer Noa, will perform a duet singing in Arabic, Hebrew and English “Einaiych–There Must be Another Way.” The annual competition features participants from forty-two member countries of the European Broadcast Union. Noa and Awad will perform in the first of two semi-final rounds on May 12. If “There Must Be Another Way” is voted among the top nine of the eighteen contestants  in the first semi-final round, the two women will go on to compete in the finals on May 16. Indeed there is another way, if only they would accept Him.

Some Political Tidbits

1. In the midst of a recent diatribe, US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi told a crowd of illegal aliens and their advocates that federal or local law enforcement of existing immigration laws is “un-American.” Pelosi, an avowed liberal-left Democrat from San Francisco, condemned operations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. Then she called the illegal aliens in the audience she was addressing “very, very patriotic.”

2. Senator Arlen Specter was unexpectedly stripped of his seniority Tuesday night in a humiliating blow from Democrats who earlier had welcomed the former Pennsylvania Republican’s defection from the GOP. The move not only strips the five-term senator of his legislative clout but also hampers his ability to persuade voters he can still bring influence to issues in Pennsylvania as he approaches election there in 2010.

3. Thomas Sowell reminds us that there is a reason why the statue of Justice wears a blindfold. There are things that courts are not supposed to see or recognize when making their decisions– the race you belong to, whether you are rich or poor, and other personal things that could bias decisions by judges and juries. It is an ideal that a society strives for, even if particular judges or juries fall short of that ideal.

Now, however, President Barack Obama has repudiated that ideal itself by saying that he wants to appoint judges with “empathy” for particular groups. This was not an isolated slip of the tongue. Barack Obama said the same thing during last year’s election campaign. Moreover, it is completely consistent with his behavior and associations over a period of years– and inconsistent with fundamental principles of American government and society.
