SETTING OUR MINDS ON THINGS ABOVE
There’s no doubt that that things are heating up in the world (I don’t mean global warming). As never before, we must know how we are to respond. Do we hunker down, dig in, and prepare for the worst, or do we go about our business as usual? Do we look for another country to move to?
I am convinced that God has placed us here at this time for a reason. I also believe that we should be on the alert just like the early church. However, the early followers of Christ were primarily about the business of being the church, following the commands and directives of Christ and the apostles.
According to Acts 2, the believers were devoted to the apostles’ teaching, to fellowship, to breaking bread together, and to prayer. They were living in unity and amazing things were happening in their midst. In short, they were spending a lot of time together, helping one another, worshiping and praising God, and experiencing God moving in mighty ways. The result was that they were finding favor with all the people and their numbers were consistently growing.
Every so often, we need to get back to the basics, and this, I believe, is such a time. Now more than ever, we need to be coming together often and looking out for one another, doing the things Christ commanded us to do, escaping from our private little cocoons and engaging in things that actually make other people’s lives better while growing the kingdom. One of the best ways to keep from despairing over the plight of our nation and the world is to do what Christ did. He gave everything he had for the benefit of others. Getting involved in the struggles of others (bearing their burdens) takes our focus off our own problems and makes us more Christ-like.
I have recently experienced this in a new prison ministry in which four of us who have been through Henry Blackaby’s “Experiencing God” study are training a group of ten inmates to become facilitators so they can lead other groups. God has brought us all together to the degree that our weekly gatherings have become the highlight of our week. We have received such joy over the spiritual growth of these men, and in us as well, that we want to do everything we can to continue with them on their spiritual journey.
My point is that while I remain watchful, my focus is on something other than my future safety. My work is fulfilling, and I am as close to the Lord as I have ever been. Reread the first eleven verses of Philippians 2 and see how God leads you to respond. I believe this message is what the Church really needs to grab hold of in these confusing and scary days.
