As racism has become the new original sin, so the activism of antiracism has become the new law. It’s not enough to be against racism. To be a true antiracist, you must be actively doing something to promote the cause and to make white people aware of their guilt and their obligation to repent and atone. You must also do the work of reversing the ever-present influences of past, present, and future racism. All of us white people must be convinced of our need to examine our lives and the lives of our ancestors so we can see whether we have participated, perpetuated, or benefited from systemic racism.
Examine our Ancestors
Apparently, examining ourselves isn’t enough. We are somehow to look into the hearts of all white people who came before us. If we see racism, we must atone for it. If we find it and do nothing, we are guilty of the unconfessed sin of white supremacy and racism. The Bible says sin brings death (James 1:15). According to one influential antiracism activist, our unconfessed sin will also lead to death, sometimes physical, sometimes metaphorical.
A Constitutional Amendment
Ibram X. Kendi, one of the most prominent antiracist activists, is pushing for a Constitutional amendment to fix the original sin of racism. His amendment would enshrine two guiding anti-racist principles: Racial inequity is evidence of racist policy, and the different racial groups are equals. It would establish and permanently fund a new Department of Anti-racism (DOA) comprised of formerly trained experts on racism and no political appointees.
This new DOA would be responsible for preclearing all local, state, and federal public policies to ensure they won’t yield racial inequity, monitor those policies, investigate private racist policies when racial inequity surfaces, and monitor public officials for expressions of racist ideas. The DOA would be empowered with disciplinary tools to yield over and against policymakers and public officials who do not voluntarily change their racist policy and ideas.
A Legalistic Religion
Kendi’s terminology reveals that what he is promoting is, in fact, a religious movement with a legal solution instead of a spiritual one. The healing and uniting power of the gospel is nowhere to be found. He is for legislating his version of morality. His amendment is also rooted in the basic assumption that racial inequity is evidence of racist policy. With the DOA in charge of enforcing the new laws, it becomes the new priesthood that will administer the new legal justice to confront the ubiquitous sin of racism that has defiled every white person.
I hope you can see just how insidious this movement is. It’s reminiscent of Germany in the 1930s with black people established as the superior race and white people as the cause of all in justice. Yet, in spite of the obvious lack of logic, objectivity, and scholarly research, the movement has penetrated every aspect of society. More than ever, we must remain grounded in the truth of God’s Word.
