As we continue our look at the parts of our heritage that are being canceled, today I’d like to present a brief snapshot of one of our founders’ fears that has come true. America began as an idea and an ideal. It was the fruition of Augustine’s mind, the liberty of Luther, and the capitalism of Calvin. It was the culmination of the immigration of the English Puritans, Scottish Covenanters, French Huguenots, Dutch Calvinists, and the Scotch-Irish Presbyterians of Ulster. The providence of God guided their hearts and hands as they brought forth our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution.
They Lived for Christ
The history of our once-great nation speaks of many brave souls who believed that the kingdom of God could actually be realized in their lifetimes. This would happen only when men lived for Christ rather than for worldly kingdoms. Long before these heavenly-minded pioneers were born, Christopher Columbus knew the cost of this new kingdom. On every island he set foot during his journey westward, he had his men erect a large wooden cross “as a token of Jesus Christ our Lord, and in honor of the Christian faith.”
Wisdom from John Winthrop
On June 8 of 1630, John Winthrop, the first governor of Massachusetts, set before his shipmates on the flagship Arabella, the true task of statecraft. Borrowing from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, he declared:
We shall find that the God of Israel is among us, when ten of us shall be able to resist a thousand of our enemies, when He shall make us a praise and glory, that men of future generations shall say, ‘The Lord made it like that of New England.” For we must consider that we shall be as a City upon a Hill…
John Winthrop and others battled against their City on a Hill becoming a Tower of Babel—a confusing site where men build a name for themselves. Babels are where independence from God confuses those nations that perceive the consummate virtue to be self-dependence. This is exactly what today’s Cancel Culture represents. It’s all about minimizing God and elevating man. It’s America’s version of Europe’s Age of Enlightenment and look where it got us.
All about Power
Don’t be fooled by the noble-sounding arguments against slavery and racism. They are being used just as climate change arguments are being used—to present a threat of such magnitude that the entire world must come to the aid of those in the know—the super elites with the real facts. In the end, it’s all about gaining power, and these arguments are simply an attempt to divert attention away from the Cancel Culture’s greatest obstacle—biblical Christianity.
Never forget that Satan is the god of this age, and he is controlling every worldly mover and shaker. Since the Christian influence on America (as a nation) is diminishing, what we see is our own Tower of Babel—a confusing mess in which those making the most noise are simply making a name for themselves at the expense everyone else.
