SETTING OUR MINDS ON THINGS ABOVE

The rhetoric and insane accusations and attacks from the left (and from Iran) continue and show no signs of letting up. We have more and more reasons to be praying for our nation. We never thought we would be praying the prayers we are offering. Those on the political right are pleased with the election, but shocked by the outlandish backlash. It’s so bizarre that it’s hard to know just what to pray for.
Believers in Jesus Christ should be immune from all this stuff, but the truth is that too often, we let it get to us. That’s when it’s time to refocus and keep the main thing the main thing. It’s time to live out the truth that we are more than conquerors. In the things that matter, the battle has already been won. We are to live in that truth and regain an eternal perspective. We know how things end. We know that what awaits us makes all of life’s tribulations seem so trivial.
This brings us back to the issue of prayer. Instead of focusing on answered prayer for our worldly concerns, let’s reconsider why we are praying vs, what we are praying. It’s true that God wants to answer our prayers. We get off track, however, when we are more interested in getting an answer than we are in getting to the one who gives the answer. God’s primary desire for us is that we become one with Him, not get all our questions and requests answered.
One of our most common obstacles in reaching this “oneness” is our failure to see God in the everyday things. Too often, we look for great displays of God’s power and presence and fail to realize that He is right beside us in the unspectacular grind of our most average day. I think the reason we don’t see Him is that we’re not looking for Him, at least not in the right places. The truth is that He is a lot closer than we think.
We see this in an event in the life of Elijah. He had just been a part of a fiery display of God’s might on Mt. Carmel as He put the prophets of Baal to shame, and later, to death (1 Kings 18). A short time later, we find him hiding from Queen Jezebel in a cave on Mt. Horeb (Sinai). God calls him to come out, but he is apparently too fearful and full of self-pity, so he stays inside.
God walks past the entrance of the cave, preceded by a powerful windstorm, but Elijah could tell that God was not in the wind. Next came an earthquake, followed by a fire, but God wasn’t in them either. Finally, Elijah heard a still, small voice and knew it was God.
How could he possibly hear such a faint sound? Because God was right outside. God had taken the initiative and came to where Elijah was. He invited him to come out to be with Him. He wanted Elijah to know that He was always there for him.
The same is true for us as we struggle with the nonsense around us. God wants us to remember that He will accomplish what concerns us (Psalm 138:8) and that we can find Him in the still, small, quiet events of our lives if we would only open our eyes. He is always pursuing in intimate, personal relationship with His children.
