Focused on our Mission
This week’s news brought us more normalization of sexual perversion, more questions than answers regarding the Las Vegas shooter, more revelations of Hollywood’s moral depravity, and more revelations of what being married to a Muslim husband is really like. Meanwhile, the Muslim Brotherhood continues to make inroads with easily duped government officials.
Today, I’d like to refocus on our mission so we don’t get sidetracked by what’s going on around us. Even when we try to redirect our attention, we often get so focused on how we’re doing (in our walk with the Lord) that we fail to see the bigger picture-what God is currently doing in His ongoing efforts to redeem mankind from the effects of the fall. This is what the Bible is all about-God’s love for His special creation (us) as seen through the years as He works His long-range plan to complete the process of restoring all of His creation to what it was before sin entered and corrupted all that He had made.
In a sense, God’s plan of redemption for mankind was completed when Jesus died on the cross and was resurrected. The penalty for sin had been paid once and for all. Yet, the entire creation is still groaning to be set free from its bondage to corruption (Rom. 8:19-22). God’s “big picture” plan is to reverse all the effects of sin on the world. The Bible begins by declaring that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. It ends by stating, “Behold, I am making all things new” (Rev. 21:5).
We are still living in a corrupted world-a world yet to be made new . Nearly every news story from the past week is an example of just how corrupted our world has become. At some point in time, all this will change, but in the meantime, every follower of Jesus Christ has been given his or her marching orders. Through the local church, we are to continue God’s mission-to bring the victory Jesus won over sin and Satan on the cross to those around us. Redemption of mankind has been purchased on the cross. All that needed to be done was completed on the cross. We who have received the benefit, salvation, have been charged with taking the good news to all who haven’t heard. As Jesus put it, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Mt. 28:19-20).
We are called to understand the times and to recognize the signs surrounding Jesus’ return. We are also called to show our love for our Lord through our obedience. Current events never change our marching orders, and they shouldn’t take our focus off the bigger picture of why we’re here. We are essential in completing God’s redemptive plan. The baton has been passed on to us.
It will be tragic to get to the end of our lives only to realize that we have failed to complete our primary mission in life. Talk about a wasted life! Imagine discovering that the world is the way it is largely because we failed to carry out one simple command-to make disciples (followers of Jesus Christ). Perhaps we should spend less time complaining about how bad things are and more time focused on our mission.
