SETTING OUR MINDS ON THINGS ABOVEbridge to heaven

In stark contrast to most of the week’s news is the statement in Ephesians 1:3 that true believers in Jesus Christ have been blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. It’s a great promise to offset all the nasty stuff going on, but it’s hard to grasp for several reasons.

First, earthly blessings are easier to define and identify than spiritual ones. However, the earthly ones are only temporary. We should desire the God’s blessings that will last forever and offer much more real satisfaction. Once we agree to desire the spiritual blessings, we still have a problem. These blessings are in heaven and we’re stuck here on earth. What good do they do us if we and our blessings are in different places?

At this point, an understanding of the kingdom of God helps to solve our dilemma. The terms “kingdom of God” and “kingdom of heaven” are used interchangeably in Scripture. So now we have three factors to reconcile. Us on earth, our blessings in heaven, and the kingdom of heaven which is succinctly explained in the part of the “Lord’s prayer” that says, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. The last part actually defines the first part. The kingdom of God can be defined as any society in which the will of God is acted out to the same degree that it is in heaven.

Therefore, when we are in the will of God, we are operating in the kingdom of God (kingdom of heaven), even while we’re here on earth. We are then connected to all that heaven has to offer, including those previously elusive heavenly blessings. What this means is that our obedience to God’s will determines whether we will tap into all that God has for us.

When the world’s news weighs us down, simple obedience to God’s commands will open the floodgates of heaven. Seems like a good reason to take another look at what God has called us to do regardless of what is happening in our world. I’m just sayin.’
