While the World Changes…
Imagine this week’s headlines appearing in a newspaper thirty years ago. People would be shaking their heads wondering what these articles are talking about. Most of the stories would seem preposterous, yet here we are in 2017 accustomed to the reality presented in these stories ranging from kindergartner-assisted beheadings to school-sponsored birth control. Many things are not as they used to be and most will never return to what we considered normal.
There is a part of us that fears for our kids and our grandchildren. We wonder what kind of a world we are leaving for them. Sometimes we wonder, how will they make it? or how will we make it? It’s not that we don’t know the answer. Our problem is that we allow ourselves to be distracted from the truth that we do know. If the truth will make us free, then we need to embrace the truth that will free us from the worry that creeps in from time to time. So, what is that truth?
For I the Lord do not change (Mal 3:6).
Regardless of how much the world is changing, the God who controls it never changes. He remains faithful when the world is faithless (Deut. 32:4), He remains a refuge for His people (Joel 3:16) and a sanctuary (Isaiah 8:14). He continues to be a source of strength (Isaiah 28:6), and a stronghold in times of trouble (Psalm 9:9). Though evil kings and dictators rise, He never ceases to be God Almighty, El Shaddai (Gen 17:1). When they seem to be taking control, God reveals Himself as the God over all the kingdoms (Dan. 4:17). When we discover that everything around us is built on sinking sand, He allows us to see Him as our rock (Ps. 42:9).
When others have wronged us, He reminds us that He is the God who avenges us (Ps.18:47; 94:1). When everything seems to be falling apart, He allows us to see Him as the self-existent One, the I AM (Ex.3:14) and the Great, mighty, awesome God (Deut. 10:17) as well as the God who comforts us (Is. 66:13). When evil rises, He reminds us that He is the judge of all the earth (Gen. 18:25) and that He is the One to be feared (1 Chron. 16:25).
When so many things we depend on come and go, He displays Himself as the Everlasting God (Is. 40:28) and the God who saves us (Ps. 88:1). When we grow weary, He becomes the God who sustains us (Ps. 54:4), the rock in whom we take refuge (Ps. 18:1), and the spring of living water (Jer. 2:13).
Too often, we fail to understand why God has so many names. Then, when He reveals Himself as one of them, we start to get it. It is in our times of need when He shows Himself as the answer to that need. He wants us to depend on Him, the unfailing one, and not on what the world has to offer. One day it will be burned up (see 2 Peter 3:12, 13). Why invest in something that is doomed to perish?
Regardless of how everything in the world is changing, our Lord never changes. Everything is progressing just as He said it would, so we need to chill and refocus on our ever-faithful Lord who has everything under control.
