Ideas have Consequences
This week’s news is yet another reminder that warfare is going on all around us. We’re caught in the crossfire of culture wars, religious wars, racial, and political wars. Most are primarily wars of words, but in more and more cases, the words have escalated to violence. The messages the perpetrators bring shows that we have a lot of angry running around spouting things they know nothing about.
How did we get to the place where we tolerate violent mass demonstrations? How did we get to the place where “civil disobedience” has become increasingly uncivil? Where is all the hatred and anger coming from? Are things in our nation really all that bad? We have given in to all sorts of “demands” from people across the moral spectrum. Nearly anything is accepted, or at least tolerated these days. So why are so many people still so angry?
I believe the problem is that once we told God He was no longer welcome in our public life, we have reaped the consequences of doing things our way-doing what is right in our own eyes. In Isaiah 38 we have a striking example of what happens when we humans ignore God’s will and wisdom and take matters into our own hands. This is especially true when adversity strikes.
The Lord told King Hezekiah that he was about to die and it was time to make arrangements to turn the reins over to his successor. The king begged God to extend his life since he wasn’t ready to go just yet. God relented, and granted him an additional fifteen years. It seemed like all was well…until we look at the bigger picture. It was during that extra fifteen years that Manasseh was born to the king. Manasseh became the most wicked king Judah ever endured, and he reigned for fifty-five years. If Hezekiah had been willing to accept God’s will, the entire nation would have been spared its darkest years.
But wait, there’s more. It was also during those additional fifteen years that Hezekiah foolishly showed the king of Babylon his entire storehouse of all his treasures, opening the door to Babylon’s victory over Judah (see 2 Kings 20).
Unspeakable suffering resulted simply because one man’s unwillingness to accept God’s will for him. The mess we’re in today is another version of the same story. We think we know better than God (or refuse to acknowledge His existence). That was a bad idea and now we’re suffering the consequences.
