OUR ISRAELI CONNECTION
News from The Israel Project
Public approval of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi hit an all-time low in March, though the electoral consequences of his unpopularity are unclear given disunity among the Egyptian opposition. The Muslim Brotherhood-linked president garnered only 47 percent approval in the poll, alongside 45 percent disapproval. The figures represent a dramatic drop from the 78 percent approval rate Morsi enjoyed shortly after his first 100 days in office.
Al Qaeda’s Iraqi wing is merging with an Islamist opposition group in Syria that the Washington Postdescribes as “the most aggressive and successful” of the rebel forces fighting in the country. The announcement of a formal merger between Al Qaeda in Iraq and the Syria-based Al Nusra Front was made in an online audio posting by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, head of the Islamic State in Iraq. It follows a video published earlier this week of Al Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri calling on rebels fighting in Syria to establish an Islamic state.
What activists are describing as rocked Egypt over the weekend, leaving six dead and almost a hundred people injured. Four Coptic Christians and a Muslim were killed at the beginning of the weekend in a suburb north of Cairo. A Muslim mob subsequently attacked the Sunday funeral procession held for the four at Cairo’s Coptic Orthodox cathedral, with rioters hurling rocks and Molotov cocktails as mourners took cover in the cathedral compound.
Secretary of State John Kerry met Sunday with his Turkish counterpart amid concerns that Ankara is backtracking on commitments it made to Israel during a phone call arranged last month to facilitate rapprochement between Turkey and the Jewish state.
The Syrian government has redeployed as many as 20,000 troops from areas around the country’s Golan Heights border with Israel to areas closer to Damascus.Along with the increasingly precarious status of the United Nations peacekeeping force that has monitored the area since 1974 – citing security concerns, multiple nations have reduced or withdrawn their force contributions – the moves will deepen concerns over the emergence of a power vacuum along the border. Al Qaeda-linked jihadists have taken advantage of the regional chaos to infiltrate areas where Syrian and international forces have reduced their footprints. These groups have come within striking distance of seizing portions of Syria’s chemical and biological weapons arsenal, which analysts believe they would use against Israel.
